Frontier Passage edition by Ann Bridge Literature Fiction eBooks

A story of Spain and its Civil War, and a pair of star-crossed lovers.
This new novel has many virtues, all of them attractive -- picturesque montage, an appealing cast, substantial-and often exciting -- action, and her usual quality writing. - Kirkus
Frontier Passage edition by Ann Bridge Literature Fiction eBooks
Frontier Passage centers on a romantic relationship between an impoverished Spanish aristocrat and a British journalist, during the Spanish Civil War. This is not Hemingway! Ann Bridge weaves a very complex tale, with good and bad people on both sides of the conflict. The tale is told by a gentle young British girl who loves both of the main characters, and plays her part in the unfolding of the tragic events. Scenes in the ruins of the bombed Spanish cities, in the Spanish prison, on the French frontier, and in the French towns where the journalists rest and the refugees can take shelter, are all drawn with passion and precision. The turning point of the main plot is the effect of the revolution on the Spanish aristocrat's spoiled and irresponsible husband, who comes face to face with humanity for the first time, and becomes a decent human being. The decision to loyally help him achieve this better life brings agonizing sorrow to his wife, who has long given up on him, and must now in all decency help him with his newfound resolve to be a good man. A complex tale, with other subplots not recounted here, the book is a very good read, but not a feel-good romance, despite the hopeful ending.Product details
