In Pittsburgh, what happens on football Sundays is more than just a game and for six women during the 2005 Steelers season their complicated relationships with the team provides solace, distraction and occasionally frustration. Jen is a very young and very pregnant newlywed who worries that getting married on the same day as a Steelers loss will doom her marriage. Megan never met a tailgate or a man she couldn’t conquer but is scared of losing her best friend to a relationship. Desiree is a brash professional struggling to deal with her husband’s ex-wife and children and beginning to wonder if it’s the right time to start a family of her own. Angela is a high school senior long ago branded bad luck for the Steelers and all she wants to do is get the hell out of Pittsburgh even if it means leaving behind her best friend Robbie. Patty, a mom who sends a pair of sexy panties to a different player every week, hasn’t been on a date since her divorce five years ago. And then there’s Shannon, she spends the majority of her days navigating Pittsburgh traffic and her evenings tending bar and pining after her sister’s boyfriend. As the Steelers make what seems to be an impossible run to the Super Bowl, their lives will intersect, each of them finding connections in the most unexpected places.

What Happens on Sunday Laurie Koozer 9780615695921 Books

What a unique idea for a book. I especially liked how each chapter is titled with a Steeler game from that winning season outlining who the Steelers played that week and the score from that game. The writing is crisp and clear and the author is adept at characterization. Also, she references Pittsburgh sites, neighborhoods and language which should make any Pittsburgher proud. A unique book about unique people from a unique city. Go Steelers!

What Happens on Sunday Laurie Koozer 9780615695921 Books Reviews

What Happens on Sunday is a must read for any Pittsburgh native or transplant. The author does an incredible job of not only capturing the essence of Pittsburgh during Steelers season but she also draws you in with multilayered and relatable characters. The book easily has you turning pages to see what happens with each football game and how it affects each character.
Pittsburgh is a great many things. But above all, Pittsburgh is the home of the Steelers, and during football season, life itself seems to revolve around the games. Steeler football touches all aspects of life, as we see through the tales of several woman. Their ages and positions in life all vary, but the one thing the have in common, for better or worse, is that their lives are impacted by Steeler football. Set against the backdrop of the 2005 NFL season, we watch all of these women taking their own journeys, as the Steelers try to journey to the Superbowl.

I am going to say, up front, that this book will be best appreciated by someone familiar with Pittsburgh. The city, with all her nuances and quirks, is as much a character in this book as the women whose stories we follow. The book is chock full of Pittsburgh references that would leave an outsider's mind spinning. But for me, someone who became a Pittsburgher, not by birth but by choice, and spent the 2005 football season living in my first Pittsburgh apartment, this book was simply fantastic, and brought back a lot of memories of that season.

The female characters are solidly developed. One of my favorite subtleties of this book is the way all 6 of the main female characters spill over into each others stories, in tiny little ways. That is exactly how life in Pittsburgh is; it is a big city with a small town feel, everyone seems connected. I thought that to be clever, and really skillfully woven into the stories without seeming artificial or contrived.

Each woman has her own story to tell, whether she is a newlywed, a divorcee, a high school student. Each woman deals with her own issues. The book as a whole seems to deal with the way women interact, with each other, with men, and with a city so obsessed with football. The book paints a pretty accurate picture, in a tongue in cheek way, of the mania of Steeler fans. On the surface, the characters (and the city herself) may seem a little silly, being so focused on football, but once you spend some time with them both, you will see that the people are full of heart.

I think this book is the perfect book for any Steeler fan, particularly females.

I received a review copy courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review.
My family is from Pittsburgh - enjoyed all the referencing of local spots in Pittsburgh BUT the story wasn't great and the ending was terrible.
Interesting if from Pittsburgh area, but the story fell flat at the end. Maybe they forgot to finish it. Don't bother with this one.
What Happens on Sunday is a solid debut by Laurie Koozer. With a clear voice, Koozer effortlessly interweaves the lives of her characters. She does a fantastic job of capturing snapshots of these women's lives amongst the backdrop of Pittsburgh. She builds her characters in a way that shows their vulnerabilities and strengths and makes the reader care about them. I sincerely want to read more about these women as I feel that I'm not done with them yet. Hopefully this isn't the last we hear about these characters!
I enjoyed reading the book... and was kind of sad when it ended. The reader gets wrapped up into the lives of the women in the book and you want to keep following their lives and see what happens during the 2005-2006 super bowl run of the Steelers. Any Pittsburgher will love reliving the football highlights that the book tells as well.
I throw out a disclaimer I know the author.

Now with that out of the way, I'll continue with my review. Let's just say that the only reason I gave this book a 4 instead of a 5 is because I was sad it ended. I was really looking forward to following these characters all the way to the end of the season (and the Super Bowl win). So when I hit the last page, I had to reread it because I thought I was missing something. Other than that, I loved the book. I could identify with the characters (or at least I know someone like each of the characters) and I loved the descriptions of Pittsburgh. As a expat Pittsburgher, I long for my hometown and "What Happens On Sunday" brings back the city with vivid descriptions. I think that anyone who loves football, Pittsburgh, or a good read will love this book. I read it in one sitting (coincidentally on my long flight back to Pittsburgh).
